Left Ventricular Assist Device LVAD

A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) surgery involves the implantation of a mechanical pump to assist the heart in pumping blood to the body in patients with severe heart failure. The LVAD is used either as a Bridge-to-Transplant (BTT) to temporarily support a patient waiting for a heart transplant or as Destination Therapy (DT) for those ineligible for a transplant. The procedure involves placing the LVAD into the left ventricle of the heart to help pump blood to the aorta, improving circulation.

Diagnosis

LVAD surgery is generally recommended when diagnostic tests such as echocardiography, electrocardiogram (ECG), cardiac MRI, or angiography reveal severe heart failure, where the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, and other treatments like medications or surgical options are insufficient.
