Liver Cancer Treatment

Liver cancer treatment varies based on the stage of cancer, tumor size, location, and patient's overall health. Primary treatment options include surgery (partial hepatectomy or liver transplant), ablation therapies, embolization, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Early-stage liver cancer may be addressed with surgical resection or liver transplantation, while advanced stages might require a combination of systemic therapies and localized treatments.

Types of Treatments

Partial Hepatectomy or Liver Resection - It involves the removal of the tumor and a portion of healthy liver tissue through procedures like partial hepatectomy. Liver Transplantation - It is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased or failing liver with a healthy liver from a donor. Radiofrequency Ablation of Liver - It uses heat (radiofrequency ablation) to destroy cancer cells directly in the liver. Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) - It delivers chemotherapy directly to the tumor via the hepatic artery and then blocks the blood supply to the tumor. Transarterial Radioembolization (TARE) - It combines radiation therapy and embolization by injecting radioactive microspheres into the hepatic artery to target the tumor. Systemic Chemotherapy - It uses drugs administered orally or intravenously to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Targeted Therapy - It involves drugs that specifically target molecular pathways involved in cancer growth, such as sorafenib or lenvatinib. Immunotherapy - It enhances the body’s immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, including checkpoint inhibitors like nivolumab. Radiation Therapy - It uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors, though it is less commonly used for liver cancer due to the liver’s sensitivity.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of liver cancer involves several tests, such as imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI), blood tests (including alpha-fetoprotein levels), and liver biopsy. These assessments help determine the presence, size, and spread of the tumor, guiding the formulation of an effective treatment plan.
